VIDEO ASSIGNMENT: Watch the following videos and comment on them in the same manner as your last video assignment.

1. On the first day of practice, just listen through all the videos.

2. On the second and third days, choose a small section and compare the performances as you did with your assignment last week.

1. Two measures at a time (or one!) LH & RH together as we did at the lesson. Mm. 1-8, melody and bass together (no chords).

2. mm. 1-8 - LH learn all notes. Use the new practice video as a guide to check our work, NOT to learn the notes.

3. Learn mm. 8-15 - learn the RH with correct fingering and notes.

2017-2018 Lesson 2: Luke Jow

The following assignment should take you four to six days to complete: 20-40 minutes for each day.

1. Copy the first two phrases of your Chopin onto your staff paper. Make sure to copy EVERYTHING YOU SEE. All notes, articulations, dynamics, fingerings, etc... Be very neat and take your time with this. I'd like you to feel proud of the way it looks when you're finished. How close to the original score can you make it look?

2. Listen to the first two phrases only of both the Ashkenazy and Horrowitz recordings, found in your last lesson blog. Do the following:

  • Find two specific differences in each performance.

  • Write them down and be very specific. "The dynamics were different" doesn't count. Think about how we listened to the first half of the first measure at your lesson - Remember that Ashkenazy took time on the first bass note in the LH, whereas, Horrowitz keeps strict tempo.

3. Watch your practice video above and follow the instructions!

2017-2018 Lesson 1: Luke Jow

The following assignment should take you two to three days to complete: 20-40 minutes for each day.

  1. Find the PDF I emailed you of the Chopin Prelude Op. 28 No 15 in D-flat Major. Print it out and have it with you while you follow the instructions below.

  2. Listen to all three videos below as you follow along with the score. Using paper or a computer, write down what you like and don't like. Notice if the performers follow the instructions in the score. Notice tempo changes and differences in dynamics, accents, melodies and anything else that may stick out to you. Be able to show me written or typed notes.

  3. Using blank staff paper, copy every visible detail of the score (EXCEPT THE PEDAL MARKINGS) for the first eight measures of the Prelude.

Next week: what is a Prelude? Finding patterns in this piece. A quick look at the form / structure. Learning the first phrase!
