Lesson Notes - August 29, 2026

Welcome back from camp!

Repertoire Status

George Gershwin: Three Preludes, No. 1

  • Status: notes learned through m. 46. Secure to roughly m. 28; everything past that is still new.

  • m. 40 left hand: no F-sharp in the chord.

  • m. 41 right hand (Assignment): Place the 3rd finger high on the F. This improves access to the B-flat and facilitates the down-up motion.

  • m. 43 (Assignment): Experiment with fingering (4-3, 2-3-1-2-3-1-2, or 2-3 into 1-2-3-4-5). Lift before the downbeat to emphasize the accent.

  • mm. 46-49 (Assignment): Practice chord progression (D major, C minor, A minor, C).

    • Right hand: say each chord name OUT LOUD before playing (5x correctly).

    • Left hand: bass notes only (5x correctly).

    • Hands together: outer parts only (5x correctly).

    • Inner voices: practice the "guts" of the chords.

  • Goal: mm. 46-49 hands together, no pauses, as one four-measure group.

  • m. 61 (Assignment): Learn A-flat major scale starting on D-flat. Fingering: 4-3-2-1-3 / 2-3-4-1.

  1. 🟥Print the latest version of your music in Newzik.

  2. mm. 19-25: LH Starts on the dominant and ascends through the D-flat major scale with one chromatic A-natural. Memorize this to help keep memory in tact.

  3. m. 15-18: careful to take more time at the ends of phrases. You’re rushing this a bit.

  4. Do hands alone then together practice on one page per day. Do this with and without music. You may even need to do this one phrase at a time in the beginning.

  5. 🟥Last measure of the piece: gradually come of the keyboard with hands and foot so we don’t suddenly hear the sound stop.

🟩Gershwin Prelude No. 3

  1. mm. 32-33, 39-40 - slow down here - more DRAMA! STRENGTH! Please do the pedal markings as written.

  2. mm. 51-to the end - pedal on each beat (not 4 per measure).

💚Debussy: Clair de Lune:

  1. Print the latest version of your music in Newzik.

  2. m. 39 - take a little time before the downbeat of 39. This should be the “point of arrival.” Think of mm. 39-41 as very strong and grand.

  3. mm. 4-5, 8, 10-13 - see the red pen about rhythm and motion.

  4. m. 24 - pull back slightly with tempo.

  5. m. 33 - don’t change pedal clearly

  6. Last measure of the piece: gradually come of the keyboard with hands and foot so we don’t suddenly hear the sound stop.
