May 27, 2026 (Lesson 4 of 10)

Final Recital

  1. May 30th: 2 pm

💚Czerny, Op 825 No. 1: Complete Etude

“Czerny was my first piece where I used the NFPER method. NFPER stands for Notes, Fingering, Position, Expression, and Rhythm. This method helps you learn pieces properly using good position and technique”

  1. Hands in lap thinking of the first two measures.

  2. Position: focus on round fingers and bubble.

  3. This is also too fast - please play no faster than m.m. 100 per half note (two ticks per note)

💚The Haunted Mouse (RCM, Prep. A)

“This next piece is about a little mouse that lives in a haunted house! He like to watch people run and shriek! It’s very entertaining for that mouse in the haunted house!”

  1. Hands in lap thinking of the first two measures.

  2. Remember to pop the wrist forward on each of the staccato notes.

  3. Practice with m.m. 100. One time with the metronome, and one time without.

💚A Skating Waltz (RCM, Prep. A)

“The next piece is called Skating Waltz by composer, Boris Berlin. It has a lot of dynamics! Dynamics are expressive markings in the music that tell us to play louder or softer.”

  1. Hands in lap thinking of the first two measures.

  2. Dynamics! Remember left hand is the master of the expression here. Keep the right hand soft the whole time!

  3. Practice once through, with music, at m.m. 76 (with the metronome).

  4. Then turn the metronome off and pretend that it’s on!

💚The Juggler by Nancy and Randall Faber (RCM, Prep. A)

“The Juggler is fast and fun. Look out for the part where I cross over my hands… this is where the juggler is balancing the balls!”

  1. Practice starting from 3 random measures each day.

  2. Practice once through, with music, at m.m. 92

  3. Close music. Hands in lap thinking of the first two measures. Then play at final tempo. m.m. 126 (set the metronome for reference then turn it off and play through).

Lesson Grades

  • January 28th Lesson: 5.5 out of 7

  • February 4th Lesson: 2 of 2

💚Ear Training (only at the lesson for now)

  1. Ear training is learning how to recognize tones and movement from one tone to another just by listening - no looking at music.

  2. Today, we learned how to identify intervals of 2nd and 3rd going up or down.

  3. And “Interval” is the distance between two notes (for example C to D is a 2nd).

💚Flats and Sharps: 👍

  1. Practice playing random flats and sharps on the keyboard for 30 seconds each day.

💚Musical Alphabet: Forward and backward

  1. Practice speaking the letter names forward and backward by 2nds (steps) and 3rds (skips).

💜SIGHTREADING_00_06-25_C_F_G (in Newzik)

  1. Please prepare “Days 1-5 for Driving in the G Clef”

    1. First thing we do is study the rhythm.

    2. Then study the notes.

    3. Then play!

💜Czerny, Op 825 No. 1: Complete Etude

  1. Review with your music and round fingers / relaxed wrist, once a day!

💜THEORY: Unit 5: Rhythm

  1. Prepare pages 52-55 found in the left side of your white binder

💜RHYTHM: Basic Rhyhmic Training

  1. Please prepare number 8 (clap the beat and tah the rhythm). Notice the “time signature!”

💜A Skating Waltz

  1. Practice with the video below

💜The Juggler by Nancy and Randall Faber (Prep, A)

  1. Play through with metronome 60 per quarter note and be a “pause detective”

  2. Fix your pauses! Zoom in and spot that section until the pause is gone.

⚫️Sleigh Bells by Christine Donkin (Prep A)

  1. Pause

NOTES: Say the letter names and direction of the notes out loud correctly.

  1. FINGERING: Say and play the finger numbers (this step was difficult today but better on the second try)

  2. POSITION: Focus on good position three times correctly. Keep eyes on the music.

  3. EXPRESSION: Focus on the slur (smooth and connected). Lift your wrist at the end of the slur.

  4. RHYTHM: Set the metronome to 52 → count four beats before you start → play with the metronome!

🖤READING: L&M Unit 3

  1. Page 1: Deep Blue Sea

    1. Pressing the media button, select “Deep Blue Sea Your Part.” Practice with this until you can play with it exactly as it sounds.

      1. It might not be correct after three tries so just do three in one day and be ok with that - try again the next day.

      2. Remember to keep going if you make a mistake.

    2. Once the above is correct, select the “Deep Blue Sea Accompaniment.”

      1. Do the same as above.
