How to Practice

Use the Practice Guide below. It writes your practice down for you, no comments needed.

Tap the first assignment on your list.

The timer starts by itself. Read it and practice.

When you are finished, press Done. It saves your time and opens the next one.

Need to stop for a minute? Press Pause.

Lost? Press My Assignment List at the top to go back.

Log only what you actually did, on the day you did it. Five minutes is a real entry.

Something wrong with the guide? Open the video tool, record yourself explaining it, and press Send to Dustin. It emails me a link straight away.

Some assignments finish. Those carry a Done for the Week button. Press it when the job is done and the assignment comes off your list.

Need the metronome, a recorder or the Section-Work colors? They are in Practice Tools. Tap one and it opens inside your assignment. Tap Close to put it away.

Official tracking started Monday, October 19.

[PRACTICE TOOLS]

Technique

1. 🟩 Technical Requirements for Piano, Level 6 (RCM), scales

THIS WEEK: The scales, at the printed tempo markings.

2. 🟧 Scanning your new technique book

  • Mine. I am scanning and uploading the Level 6 book for you.

Theory

3. 🟩 Celebrate Theory, Level 5, Unit 7 (RCM)

THIS WEEK: Pages 1 to 4.

  • Chords and harmony. Tell me if it turns out to be easy and we will move on.

Musicianship

4. ⬛️ Basic Rhythmic Training, No. 115 (Starer)

  • On hold. Don't practice this one.

5. ⬛️ Sight-Reading: Czerny, Op. 599, from No. 64

  • On hold. Don't practice this one.

Repertoire

6. 🟩 Invention No. 4 in D minor, BWV 775 (Bach), mm. 26-33

THIS WEEK: Measures 26 to 33. Keep the same tempo all the way through.

Speed building: 54 to 90.

  • Soft left hand trill. Stop the right hand, keep the left going, and soften it.

  • The trill section in the left hand is already far better than last time.

  • You slow down in the right hand through here. That is the coordination, and it is the thing to even out.

7. 🟩 Invention No. 4 in D minor, BWV 775 (Bach), mm. 1-25

THIS WEEK: Measures 1 to 25. A round at m.m. 54, then a round at m.m. 76, then try m.m. 90.

  • Start in sections of 8 measures, then build the sections as you get comfortable.

  • Slow practice is the point, not the warm-up to it. The slower you practice Baroque, the cleaner it comes out.

  • If you make more mistakes slowly than fast, that is muscle memory covering for the notes. Slow is what fixes it.

  • What I am hearing is small pauses scattered through the page. Those are the thing to weed out.

8. 🟩 Invention No. 4 in D minor, BWV 775 (Bach), mm. 33-52

THIS WEEK: Measures 33 to 52. Hands alone, then hands together.

  • Keep getting the notes and the fingering into your fingers.

9. 🟪 Sonatina in F major, Anh. 5 No. 2 (Beethoven)

THIS WEEK: From the top with the metronome at m.m. 88 per eighth note.

Practice type: Review.

  • Same assignment as last week.

  • When the timer goes off, mark where you stopped and pick up there next time.

  • Any note or fingering error, go back one measure and fix it, then carry on. Don't start over.

  • We will put the speed up again next time.

10. 🟩 L'Indifférente, from Nouvelles suites de pièces de clavecin (Rameau), mm. 17-24

THIS WEEK: Measures 17 to 24. Hands alone, then hands together, with the correct fingering.

  • We worked out the fingering in the lesson. Whatever you decide, stay consistent with it.

  • Two, two, one, two, three, one, two on the left hand crossing.

  • Detached in the left hand. Once the right hand is connected, the left is no longer attached.

11. 🟩 L'Indifférente, from Nouvelles suites de pièces de clavecin (Rameau), mm. 25-36

THIS WEEK: Measures 25 to 36. Hands alone, and hands together if you can.

  • New section.

12. 🟩 L'Indifférente, from Nouvelles suites de pièces de clavecin (Rameau), mm. 1-16

THIS WEEK: Measures 1 to 16. Keep refining. Watch the rhythm in measure 3.

  • In measure 3 you go twice as fast on those two notes. Count it in.

  • Polish it at m.m. 60, then m.m. 78.

  • Don't worry about the repeats for now.

13. ⬛️ Prelude, Op. 39 No. 19 (Kabalevsky)

  • On hold. Don't practice this one.
