🟥🚨RCM Technical Requirements Level 03 (set timer for 7 min every day)
For each item, do one round of close-loud (no faster than m.m. 60 per note), then with the metronome at the final tempo. If you make any mistakes, slow it down and do it three times correctly before you move on.
Remember two octaves!
🟨🚨Mouse Dance by Jakub Metelka b. 1986 (L. 3, Etude)
Memorization
Measures 1-8:
LH play with music, then without. If you have mistakes, continue to the end of your section, and then look at the music to fix the issue in your mind, then put the music away again and try again.
RH: same as above
HT: same as above.
Measures 8-End
Same steps as above.
Entire Piece
Same steps as above.
🟪Prelude VII by Barbara Arens (L. 3, Etude)
Some memory issues around mm. 11-13. Practice starting from random measures with and without the music.
mm. 10, and 18 - change your pedal cleanly and hold the whole notes for their full value.
The pp texture is getting so much better!
🟩Musette in D Major BWV Anh. 126 by J. S. Bach (L 3, A)
Practice starting from random measures with and without music.
Measures 1-2 - you need to make sure these are absolutely steady when you start. It will be an easy target for point
annihilation!
Practice once a day, all 16th notes with a close-loud technique - remember this is very slow, and the wrist pops forward on each note strongly.
🟩Beethoven, Sonatina in G Major, Ahn. 5, I. Moderato (L. 3, B)
Practice playing in 8 measure chunks. with music then without. And fix any mistakes in the same manner as Mouse Dance.
Then practice playing entire piece without music - record yourself for extra pressure.
🟨Schumann, Album for the Young, Op. 68 No. 1, Melody (L. 3, C)
Listen to your audio recording once a day whilst looking at the music. Focus on the tempo, the sound, the dynamics, the rit. fermatas etc. Please don’t play any faster than this recording.
RH, LH, HT, four measures at a time, focusing on memorization. Send Dustin a video or audio by Wednesday night of the whole pieces memorized similar to the recording.

N – Notes – correct pitches and accidentals (🟦 Blue)
F – Fingering – consistent, effective finger choices (🟧 Orange)
P – Position – hand shape, posture, and keyboard geography (🟪 Purple)
E – Expression – phrasing, dynamics, articulation, tone, etc. (🟩 Green)
R – Rhythm – steady pulse, accurate timing, and rests (🟥 Red)
✅ If you're only recording audio, just use NER.
Step-by-Step Practice Flow
Record your section once — video is best, but audio is fine too.
Listen back with one color/goal in mind.
As you listen, mark your music using that color anywhere it needs improvement.
Repeat for each remaining color, one at a time, until all five have been addressed.
Choose a small “spot” section from your markings — just a few measures or a tricky passage.
“Spot” until it’s solid — meaning:
✅ 3 times in a row correctly, or
✅ 5 total correct repetitions, then move on.
Focus on one or two colors at a time while practicing that spot.
Use the troubleshooting checklist below if you're stuck.
🔧 Troubleshooting Tips
🎯 If you’ve tried to fix something three times in-a-row and it’s still not working, don’t just repeat it — troubleshoot:
Do you need to slow down?
Should you practice hands alone?
Could you make the spot even smaller?
Would technical exercises help (staccato, accents, etc.)?
Do you need to think ahead more clearly?
