Frédéric Chopin’s Nocturne in E-flat Major is one of the most beloved piano pieces ever written — and for good reason. It sings like an operatic aria, with a flowing melody that rises, falls, and decorates itself in delicate turns and ornaments.

This next piece is a gavotte — a dance from the Baroque period. Handel didn’t write it for ballerinas, though. It was for fancy people in wigs dancing at royal parties. So if you imagine tiptoeing across a golden ballroom, you’re on the right track.

Written near the end of his performing career and long after his Transcendental Études, Un Sospiro (“a sigh”) marks Liszt’s shift from flamboyant virtuoso to reflective philosopher and composer. The music builds and releases like a single breath, ending with a final, delicate sigh. Perhaps it reflects the closing of a legendary performing career — or a tribute to his love at the time, Princess Carolyne. Either way, its beauty is as timeless as a sigh itself.
