How to Practice

Use the Practice Guide below. It logs your practice for you — no comments needed.

  1. Press Start from # whatever number it shows. It picks up where you stopped last time.

  2. Press Start, read the assignment, practice.

  3. Tap the kind of practice, then press Done.

  4. Press Next practice item and go again.

Capped items count down and chime. Keep going if it's going well.

Some assignments finish. Those carry a Done for the Week button. Press it when the job is done and the assignment comes off your list. Technique and repertoire don't have one; those are every day.

Need the metronome, a recorder or the NFPER colors? They are in Practice Tools, right under the practice types. Tap one and it opens inside your assignment. Tap Close to put it away.

Got something to say about an assignment? Paste the line it gives you into the comments and add your note.

Log only what you actually did, on the day you did it. Five minutes is a real entry. Logging starts October 1.

[PRACTICE TOOLS]

Setup

1. 🟥 Print Masquerade

One-time assignment. Print it and put it in your black three-ring binder.

Practice setup: binder open at the piano, Practice Guide open on the iPad.

Press Done for the Week once it is printed and in your binder.

Musicianship

2. 🟩 Piano Adventures Sightreading, Level 2A

⏱ Max 5 minutes per practice session.

  • In Newzik. Start on page 1 of the PDF.

  • Do the repeats.

  • Rough or wrong? Repeat it until the notes, fingering and timing are there, then go on.

  • Two minutes left on the clock, go to the next one anyway.

  • Put a big X through each page as you finish it so you know where to start next time.

Repertoire

Masquerade — all four chunks, same method

  • Right hand, left hand, hands together.

  • NFPER on the spotting counter, three correct in a row for each focus.

  • Notes and fingering: just look at the page and check.

  • Do each chunk one time and the Practice Guide joins them into 1-4 and 5-8 by itself, then into 1-8. That is brick practice: small bits first, then stick them together.

  • The rest of your practice time goes on Masquerade. Five minutes still counts as a logged day, even if it is two measures.

3. 🟥 Masquerade (Niamath), mm. 1-2

4. 🟥 Masquerade (Niamath), mm. 3-4

5. 🟥 Masquerade (Niamath), mm. 5-6

6. 🟥 Masquerade (Niamath), mm. 7-8
