How to Practice

Use the Practice Tools panel below. It logs your practice for you, no comments needed.

  • Press Start here. It picks up where you stopped last time.

  • Read the assignment, press Start, practice.

  • When you are finished, press Done.

  • Press Next practice item and go again.

Try for five days a week. Fifteen minutes is plenty.

Log only what you really did, on the day you did it.

Log every practice session from today. Official tracking starts Monday, October 19, the Monday after our first group class. Logging now is how we get the kinks out.

THIS WEEK: Be able to teach me about the staff with no hints.

  • Five lines and four spaces, counted from the bottom.

  • Notes go up and down, on lines and in spaces.

  • Yellow means you are doing fine and this just needs a little extra work.

  • Every day until you can say it without looking.

6. 🟩 Basic Rhythmic Training (Starer), No. 5, memorize

THIS WEEK: Memorize No. 5 on page 9. Follow the video for how.

Practice type: Memorizing.

  • Watch the overview first, then the one about memorizing each brick.

  • Zoom in on a small piece. Clap and ta it with the book, then close the book and do it from memory.

  • Then pick another small piece and do the same.

  • Once both pieces are comfortable, put them together. That is brick building, and we will use it on your pieces too.

  • Clap on the final bar line as well.

  • This may take the whole week. Every day.

THIS WEEK: Watch the whole video, then learn the notes well enough to play it with me.

  • Piano seat belt first, and scoot back on the bench.

  • Up-stem notes are the right hand. Down-stem notes are the left hand.

  • We start with the left hand and we end on the left hand.

  • Know which group of black keys each part belongs to.

  • We need this really well, because next time I play the other part while you play this one.
