Assignment Legend
โค๏ธ= Priority above all else (repeated issues or reglect).
๐= Priority after red (on the right track but needs more work).
๐= Item we did not do at the last lesson. Lesson priority before green.
๐= on the right track! Practice these items as usual but prioritize other colors first.
๐ค= donโt practice this item (on hold).
๐จ Color-Focus Practice (NFPER)
At the top of your music, write NFPER using the following color system:
N โ Notes โ correct pitches and accidentals (๐ฆ Blue)
F โ Fingering โ consistent, effective finger choices (๐ง Orange)
P โ Position โ hand shape, posture, and keyboard geography (๐ช Purple)
E โ Expression โ dynamics, articulation (staccato, accents, slurs), etc. (๐ฉ Green)
R โ Rhythm โ steady pulse, accurate timing, and rests (๐ฅ Red)
โ If you're only recording audio, just use NER.
Step-by-Step Practice Flow
Record your section once โ video is best, but audio is fine too.
Listen back with one color/goal in mind.
As you listen, mark your music using that color anywhere it needs improvement.
Repeat for each remaining color, one at a time, until all five have been addressed.
Choose a small โspotโ section from your markings โ just a few measures or a tricky passage.
โSpotโ until itโs solid and you can erase the markings! โ meaning:
โ 3 times in a row correctly, or
โ 5 total correct repetitions, then move on.
Focus on one or two colors at a time while practicing the spot.
Use the troubleshooting checklist below if you're stuck.
๐ง Troubleshooting Tips
๐ฏ If youโve tried to fix something three times in-a-row and itโs still not working, donโt just repeat it โ troubleshoot:
Do you need to slow down?
Should you practice hands alone?
Could you make the spot even smaller?
Would technical exercises help (staccato, accents, etc.)?
Do you need to think ahead more clearly?
