Please do as much as possible from the Set Exercises - following lesson is dedicated to this section of the assessment. Many thanks!

2017-2018 Lesson 24: Marina Rocha (with Dustin)

Due by Tuesday, April 17th:

  1. Record yourself playing each of your five assessment pieces

  2. Listen / watch back with your music in front of you, listening for dynamics, articulations, tempo, correct rhythm, pauses, etc.

  3. Pause the video / recording and write down each SPOT (section that needs work) and GOAL (what needs to be fixed) in your practice chart.

  4. Text or email a photo of the "Spotting & Section Work" charts to both Dustin and Rami.

A Few Notes:

  1. What does your body / movements / posture say about your attitude toward the music? Does is say that you care and are respectful of the pieces you play? Does is say you are bored or disinterested?
  2. Be able to speak the names of all five of your PIECES (not songs) and the full names of each composer - clearly and easily! :)
  3. Remember that 2 points will be taken off for each piece that is not memorized.
  4. When you play wrong notes or when do something you didn't mean to do, what should you do then? Move on! Don't let anyone know what happened. No words or noises from your mouth. DO NOT ask to restart - EVER. :)
  5. Remember how difficult it was to play quietly on Dustin's piano? Each piano is different. How quickly will you adjust to the new instrument so you can create those "CUTE" and delicate sounds we talked about?

2017-2018 Lesson 23: Marina Rocha

Marina, your pieces are getting better and better! Very well done for the patient work you’ve done so far. I’m very proud of you, and you should be proud for yourself as well!

General comments: Remember the basic principles of why we make music! As pianists we bring to life such beautiful pieces so we can offer our audience an experience. Sometimes the experience can be happy, exciting, sad, thoughtful, reflecting etc etc. It always depends on the piece we are playing and, and the story we want to tell through our playing. All we need to do is concentrate during our performance, and follow the composer’s directions.

Listen to phrasing, dynamic contrasts, ‘listen’ to your body (breathe) and fingers.

Bach - Dynamic contrasts. Listen/feel your body (arms) when you have the jump to F#. Trust yourself!!! Begin with confidence, and enthousiasm.

Kabalevsky

Dynamic contrasts. Make sure you’re focused until the last rest of the piece!

Burgmuller

Dynamic contrasts. Listen to each and every 16th note - especially LH. Do not rush at the last line!!!!

88 per quarter beat!

Czerny

Character  / scherzando (funnily) Think of butterflies, flying...please do not rush at the last line.

Clementi

Continue the good work, slow practice, long / short eighth notes. Aim at playing the whole page without stopping.

Goals:

1. Be precise with notes and fingerings - practice slow the following measures. 1-3 (first note), 9-12(last note), 17-19(last note), and 17-end). The above measures should be practiced with metronome at 68 per eighth beat.

2. Practice the whole piece with metronome. First at 80 per eighth note, then 84...88...92...96...100.

Set exercises:

Complete Set 1. And do Set 2. (We’ll begin with this in January).  If you find something that you don’t know just circle that word and we’ll talk about it together.

Review Pieces: The pieces below should be prepared for performance at any time. Keep practicing them slow, HS and HT.
